Dull Cricut Blade? Don't buy replacement yet!

As I was cutting all my stuff on Cricut, I was losing patience watching all my beautiful cardstock gone to waste because of my old, dull, blade.  It would start cutting, and then it would tear and make the paper bunch up.  I didn't have any replacements on hand, and weather being so gloomy and rainy, there was no way I was going to take my 3 kids in the car to get a new blade.

Then it occurred to me that if I can sharpen a knife, why wouldn't I be able to do that with a Cricut blade?  I took the blade, ran it through the sharpening block just a few times and look at the difference:

I would recommend doing it only a few times, as doing too much would alter the length of the blade - and that would most likely create problems in setting the depth of the blade.  However, in the meantime, I do have 3 other dull ones - I'm going to pull all of them out and sharpen them before I decide to take my 3 kids out to buy a blade.

Wow!  Thanks for the tip.  I would never have though of that.  Like the saying goes, "necessity is the mother of invention".

AWESOME suggestion! I feel your pain about lugging kids out, in any weather, it can be a trial.

I think the thought process to think outside the box goes along with the SCAL mindset. Using your noodle to improvise. I'm going to try this

Great tip Thienly! As long as you're careful, there's nothing to lose by trying to sharpen it, right? I'm going to try it next time.

I've perfected using my MS blue glue to re-tack my Cricut Mats and it is GREAT!

Great tip... I use my diamond tip nail file instead... it seems to not take off as much so I can "refresh" my blades a few extra times.

Also Krylon Easy Tack (7020) to refresh your mats (sold at walmart, Michaels, etc). It is the #1 perferred repositionable adhesive for mats on the market!

and cutter glide... it is amazing how much longer the blades last with just a little dab. http://www.scrap-savvy.com/servlet/the-90/Cutter-Glide/Detail

You could also just cut Craft Foil with your machine and it sharpens it the same as punching tin foil accomplished on your craft punches.  I teach Cricut Classes and share these tips in class alot.  The stuff I like to use is called Art Emboss colored foils.  Once you cut a shape run it thru your cuttlebug and mount to chipboard you will sharpen your blade and have a beautiful project in one shot! Love all these ideas-I go through so many blades and the only place to order mine are online! Thanks so much. I do like the cutter glide, definately a must for me.

How exactl does the Cutter glide work?

It helps your blade "glide" through the paper smoother...less resistance without interferring with the blade's cut. (works with scissors & craft punches too)
