Making T-Shirt Yarn and ribbon rose buttons

I stood staring at my closet yesterday when I decided it was time it get organized again.  I love it when John helps with the laundry, but he just sticks everything wherever and I like it color coded.  Looking at the wall of black t-shirts and row of colorful tanktops I realized something... I never ever wear the tank tops anymore. They are just taking up space.  Still, they aren't really in good enough condition to donate.

Somewhere in the back of my head I remembered t-shirt yarn.  Well, I have great colors of t-shirts for yarn.  Shoot, I like the colors even if I just make balls out of them and never do anything with it... just you know, decorative yarn balls.

First stop - University You Tube.

I found a great how-to video on creating tshirt yarn...

Step 2 - get to cutting.  Following the directions, I cut off the seams and then cut the fabric in a spiral all the way up.  You know, it's very surprising how much yarn you can actually get from a tank top!

Step 3 - roll it into a ball.

hmmm.... I seemed to have this leftover knit - there has to be something I can do with it!  (uh oh, am I turning into a hoarder?) I decided to cut it into squares that would become little rosettes.

Then I thought, I hate to waste the lacy edges of my tank top.... more rosettes.  For these I glued a button underneath to make a base.

There, now I have a bunch of rosettes (and material to make at least 2 dozen more).  I think I know how I'll be spending my nights in front of the TV now.... cleaning out my closet =)

I do the same with my kids t-shirts - and use the yarn to make jewelry and carpets - love the flower idea, I make big petals to make big roses for headbands. these little ones are great - thanks for sharing this idea.
