~A New Year's Eve Adventure!~

I had quite the adventure one new Year's Eve when I was 12 years old!! I was babysitting 2 little adorable boys for my next door neighbors, Loretta and Norman and also watching my sisters. I can not recall where my Dad had gone for New Year's as my parents were divorced by then and we lived with him. But I of course being the oldest got the babysitting, although an unpaid job, duties.

I remember we made popcorn and stayed up and watched Guy Lombardo, which was a tradition of many years for us and for many years after. But nothing really remarkable about the night until the neighbors came home!

I am afraid it was all too true that Loretta, who was a very pretty lady, had quite a roving way about her and I do not mean wool roving!! I never understood why she did as Norman was a very good looking guy and very talented and I mean after all they seemed to have a perfect life and 2 beautiful little red-headed boys.

They had gone to a party at the airport in Kansas City and Loretta said she left something there and had to go back to get it and asked my father if I could go with her. Maybe I was to be her alibi or something, not sure but I got to go with her. Now the Municipal Airport was some distance from where we lived in Lee's Summit and I was quite sleepy by then but Loretta was a talker and chattered all the way and I stayed awake...for awhile anyway.

We got to the airport and she drove around to one of the hangars and parked and we got out and walked up to this guy, she shook his hand and said I left my shawl here and have to get it..I recall him saying he knew right where it was..now I did think it was kind of strange that he had her shawl there at a hangar but then I was only 12 and not very worldly!

He asked me if I had ever been on a big plane and I said no not really but had seen many of them at the Air Force base that was close to my house. He said I was going to be allowed to go on one and look it over as much as I wanted to!! So he took me up the rickety metal stairs and told me not to touch any switches but look around as much as I wanted too!! How cool I thought!

So I looked all around and was fascinated with the plane and even got myself a 7-up from the galley!! I sat down in a seat to look out over all the lights on the runways and noticed Loretta was kissing this guy..humm I wondered why, maybe he was a relative and she was wishing him Happy new year! Well I sat there and fell asleep! I had found a wool and kind of itchy blanket and pillow and laid down on the seats while waiting for them to come get me. Not a good idea I found out!

I woke up in Oklahoma City!! Oh my how angry my father was going to be!! Seems I was sleeping on a plane that was going back to OKC only taking back some equipment on it and no one was expected to be on that plane. I was scared and wondered how the heck i was going to get back home! But they put me on a plane with other passengers headed back to KC and there on the ground was my father waiting for me..oh man this was going to be bad!! He said not a word all the way back to Lee's Summit..all the time I was thinking why was he mad at me..this was not my fault or my plan at all..but it turned out he was not mad at me but at Loretta and was just too mad to talk! I never got to babysit for them again!!

I hope where ever your New Year takes you that you have a good adventure and that you get back home safe and sound!!

Happy 2012 and may you prosper in this New Year!!

God Bless all!

I think that's a winner as one of the best New Year's Eve tales ever.

Yeah back in those days which was 50 years ago, there was not much security and people came and went at airports with out restrictions..people used to really drive right up to planes and get on..and I don't even think there was CPS back then..

Oh my....your parents must have been sick with worry when you didn't come home after babysitting.  First thing that came to mind was why in the world did she want you to go with her instead of taking you home.  She could still have gone back with the same lame excuse.  And, why did you Dad give her the ok to take you late at night?  I assume she and her hubby had been drinking at the party?  Wow, back in the dark ages when I babysat...all the time.  The husbands would walk me home so as not to be driving after drinking.  WOW, that's quite a story.  Glad you made it home safe.

She asked my father if I could go with her and he was not worried for me to be going with her at all and I doubt they were drinking as no one my father knew hardly ever took a drink of anything..her husband may have had a couple of highballs, but she never drank anything but 7-up as she took some kind of medicine for problems with her legs..I think she wanted me along for someone to talk to and someone to maybe provide her an alibi with that she really did forget and go pick up her shawl..my father trusted these people with his kids, most all our neighbors trusted one another with each other's kids..it was 50 years ago and we were all quite innocent still..we lived next door to one another and no one had any reason to not trust..like I said a time of great innocence! The Donna Reed era..

That's hilarious!  What an adventure.  I'm sure your dad had all sorts of emotions. Wish I could sleep that deep.  What a great story.  Thanks for sharing.

Except Donna Reed didn't hook up with Flyboys at airport parties, LOL!  All my New Years' Eve babysitting stories are boring!  In fact, no stories at all... yours is GREAT! (Er.. since it did have a happy ending.)  Have a wonderful and safe New Year's Eve and Day, this time!

Donna Reed, man there's a name I hadn't thought of in years.  I always loved that show.  My parents were very skeptical and not particular trusting of others so guess that's why that seemed so different to me.  Still though, makes for a great story...perhaps you could widen it and make a movie, lol.

I could never sleep like that.  Being that I'm in KC, and my mom was of that time as well, told her your story tonight and she about died laughing.  She grew up in Gladstone.

Donna, I think her husband knew she was kind of a roving kind..Loretta was a very beautiful woman but was very insecure as she had polio as a child and had these deep scars on her legs that looked like she had zippers in her legs..she was quite tiny and had gorgeous red hair and tons of it too..and she was Marilyn Monroe beautiful..Gunilla the only thing that scared me was the thought of what my Daddy would do!! Charm at that time the airport was right on the river and was a busy and glamorous place for a kid from Lee's Summit which was very small back then.

OMG, Gen..what a story!  My cousin has one similar, except he was an adult, had too much to drink, got on an inter-island plane and spent the night on Maui (he lived on the Big Island-Hawaii) LOL!  At least  you only had to deal with a dad who loved you..he had to deal with a wife, who at that point hated him!  LOL!  Anyway, Gen, I am not sure why I haven't been following you all this time, I swear I thought I was!  When I went down the list on the Creating the Hive post re: Pinterest, I found that I hadn't followed you, yet..so anyway, I am pinning your blog on to my board here:  http://pinterest.com/redemptionart/creating-the-hive/  "see you soon!"  Aloha, Connie
