Oh My ... Where have I been? Well I'm back and I need help!!!!

It seems I haven't posted in forever!  I've been trying to keep up with all the other blogs.  But I just haven't had time to do any blogging myself.  I did want to share with you a new project I'm working on.  So far, it's not going very well.  And I could use some good advice.

My first attemp at polymer clay was good and bad!  I thought I was doing great, for a beginner anyway.  After all, I haven't tried an art doll with clay before.  I started just with a head, hands and feet.  I thought I would make the rest of the body with fabric.  Like I said, I thought I was doing pretty good.  Then I broke a thumb.  No no, not MY thumb ... the art doll's thumb.

Art Doll Hands

Not a bad first attempt.  Actually the pic itself is terrible.  But you get the idea.

Then suddenly it happened ... I hardly touched her hand and the thumb fell off.  I had just told my husband not to touch it because it looked so fragile.  Then I turned right around and broke it myself.

Art Doll Hand

I think my first mistake was using the wrong clay for this project.  In my defense, I knew the clay was fragile.  I just wanted to see if I could actually do it.  I used Super Sculpey clay.  It's great stuff, just not for tiny delicate things like fingers I guess.  Oh well, live and learn.

Art Doll feet

The feet seem to be o.k.  No tiny little parts to break off.  Although, now that I think about it.  Those little ankles might break as well.  I have a wire running through the ankle and foot.

Art Doll Head Art Doll Head

Her face isn't exactly what I had in mind ... what can I say ... she looks like a little frightened fairy.  I'm still working on the hair.  It's not even attached yet.  But I'm pretty sure she wants to be a red head.

I did a lot of research and finally ordered some different clay.  It's called Apoxie Sculpt.  It's supposed to dry hard as a rock.  Has anyone used this clay?  That's probably a dumb question.  All of you clay sculptors I'm sure have used it or have at least heard of it.  Anyway, I'm going to give it a try.  I really liked working with the clay.  It was just so disappointing to find it wasn't strong enough for delicate little fingers.

I'll try to keep you posted on my progress with the new clay.  Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated.  FYI... I didn't use any wire in the fingers.  Maybe I should have.  No one seemed to be using it on YouTube.  Wow!  so many How To's on YouTube!!

Oh Diane, it must be the year for trying new things.  I'm in awe of your sculpture and keen to see her finished.  Can't help with advice sorry, but I'm sure you'll get some great suggestions soon as there's lots of clever clay people at the Hive.  Her hands and feet look so realistic.  Keep up the great work.

Thanks Christine.  I want to wait to see what other clay people have to say about the Apoxy Sculpt before I try it again.  I'm so anxious to see how she turns out.  I'm working on her hair now.  Most of her cloth body is ready as well.  I just need to redo the hands and then start to make her come alive.
