I know you love pinterest. I love pinterest too. We've seen the addiction explode all over the place. Reading through the blogs here on The Hive someone every day admits they've discovered Pinterest or they spend too much time with it. You know how this works, you can view this new technology a good thing or a bad one. You can work with it or against it. We've decided to work with it. so....

I'm issuing A

CHALLENGE

Rules:

Create a board on Pinterest labeled "Creating The Hive" or "The Hive"
Post a link to your board on this blog
Through the next 30 days pin all the photos to your favorite HIVE crafty blogs (current or past) to your hive board.

At the end of the 30 days (February 21st) we will pick one of the lucky board winners to win a $50 gift card to Amazon, Michaels or Joann's (your choice).

Marina - you can login with your email and a password, or if you have a facebook or twitter account, you can use those to login (which you can do here as well)... if you are logged into FB or Twitter, you just can click that button and it will auto log you in. If you don' thave them, just scroll down and you'll see that you can use an email and password.

Just a quick note - it's your board, so do what you want with it... But the point of the challenge is to add photos from The Hive so everyone will want to join us & our community. They are to get more exposure to your Hive blogs... Ideally the boards you create for this challenge are not repinned from other sites... Just ours, or our members.

I have to disagree with Kerry. I really don't see how people are being taken advantage of. Yes the photos we pin are linked to the Hive but they are also linked to each person's posting. If someone is interested to learn more than they can connect to that person's outside blog, website or etsy shop easily from the profile on the post. It's right there.

Also some artists don't have their own stand alone blogs so I really feel this is helping them get noticed too. I've changed the way I'm pinning from The Hive by giving credit to each artist in the description so it's clear who the work belongs to and I hope my fellow Hivers will do the same.

I feel that this is a great way to promote The Hive as a creative hub by showing all the unique and different crafters and artists who enjoy posting their work and talking to like-mined people.

Here is my link. I also disagree with Kerry, when you pin somenes project from their blog, it shows the url of the blog it came from, so everyone is being recognized for their crafts. The only statement that says Creating the Hive is the name of the board. I think it's a great way for crafters to get some recognition and exposure for their creativity, it's a good thing!

Pamela - I found your pinterest account, but not a Hive board, so unfortunately I could not follow you.

I've followed everyone else who posted a link.

Now, to address the "controversy" posted from Kerry

The goal of this challenge, and why I posted it, is to promote our site and the artists who are in our community. Every artist or crafter who posts their work on our site does so in hopes that they will get more readers, sell more on etsy or something along those lines. Some are crafters who just really want to share what they do.

Posting pins on pinterest from our site is no different than when we ask people to "tweet" or "facebook" their favorite posts. They do it from the tweet or facebook share buttons at the bottom of our posts. By creating entire boards full of HIVE members awesome goodness, our hopes are that pinterest followers (our primary target audience) will look and see how much creativity there is here and become a member of our community.

We DO want our members to get the credit for their work. When the links on pinterest are clicked and they are directed back to The Hive, the blogs clearly list who did the work AND what their blog address is. Members who provide partial feeds with a photo require that the viewer then go to their regular blog to read the rest of it (though I completely admit that partial feeds are almost never featured on The Hive and they have the lowest read rate).

IF pinterest fans do click through to our site because they found something they liked that they wanted the tutorial on, perhaps they will also click through our site and find other bloggers they like. Isn't that why all of The Hive members who have blogs here hoped to accomplish? By being a community of artists, they are more searchable, findable and someone else is helping to market what they do?

Helen - what Kerry is talking about is rather than pinning from the blog here on the Hive, clicking on the bloggers home blog and pinning from there. What I'm talking about is pinning directly from their blog here on The Hive.

The whole point of "social media posting" of artistic items, is to gain interest in the products you are trying to sell. Whether you use Facebook, Blogger, Pinterest, The Hive, or any number of other sites, the ultimate goal here is to put yourself out there, in hopes of gaining new followers, and customers.

There are always going to be "Negative Nancy's" to deal with, no matter your medium of promotion. Don't let one person discourage you from doing your best to promote yourself, and your items. Sure, there are a lot of people who can "do what we do" and re-create items that we have made. But, in the same turn, there are those that can't, and that will fall in love with your items, and buy them because they want them.

I hope that, as a group, we will all work together as a team to promote each other, and gain the audience we are trying to reach.

No, Helen, that is not what I meant at all! I've been seeing a lot of negativity coming from people who think everyone is out to "steal" their ideas. Being a life-long crafter, I can make just about anything I want to make, given the time and materials to do so. But, as a consumer, I choose to buy from other crafters because I love what *they* do, and want to support them in their endeavors. And, I enjoy seeing what other crafters create because I am an artistic soul myself.

I simply meant to say that we shouldn't let nay-sayers keep us from promoting ourselves to the best of our ability. As small-timers, we don't have the budget that the larger corps. do to advertise and get our name out there. It is up to us to do the best we can, with the means that have been provided.

Personally, I think The Hive absolutely ROCKS, and I thank them for providing us with yet another opportunity to promote and gain interest in our hand-crafted products.

I am so inspired by the creativity of others and hope that I am able to be a source of inspiration as well.

I create one of a kind handbags and pillows using mostly upcycled garments and fabrics. I also offer a custom photo bag service at a fraction of the cost of the bigger providers. either one... the goal here is to create a "buzz" (no pun intended, well ok, maybe a little!) about the people and products that Hivers are trying to promote... if you see something you like on someone else's Hive board, you can repin it to your own. Also, if you read some of the blogs here, you can pin from those as well...

At the top of this page is a video link on how to add a "pin it" button to your tool bar, which will save you steps in pinning. It's really simple, just a "drag and drop". Try it! You'll be so glad you did! It saves me a ton of time!

I'm not sure, but I don't think we are supposed to be repinning from each other pinit boards, but rather pinning directly from the creating the hive blog. That way the link goes back to the blog owner.

@Kerry I was in no way trying to point fingers at anyone, and apologize if that is the way it was taken... I was actually referring to all those who are jumping on the SOPA bandwagon without realizing that they themselves have posted their items in hopes of gaining more viewers and sales, only to have their pictures pinned and posted on multiple websites where they feel that they aren't getting the credit they deserve. There are upsides and downsides, goods and bads, that go along with any medium you choose to use. When at all possible, I try to use the artist's direct link to pin or post, but that isn't always possible. When I see something I like, whether on Pinterest, FB, etc., I pin it or share it because I, myself, like it. I can't always worry about who's going to get credit for it.

The bottom line is this: If you are worried about infringement of your copyrights, works, etc., then don't post it to begin with, then you have nothing to worry about from the get-go.

Again, Kerry, I do apologize, as I was not trying to point fingers, or make negative statements about any person in particular. I was merely stating my opinion about the so-called controversy.

Just a quick note since I'm in the middle of stripping wallpaper today....

I would really love this to be a positive thing and not a negative one. So, let's not let it go down this road. We are all kind and lovely people who just want to be seen & heard. We are a friendly and sharing community and sometimes feathers get ruffled because of some cattiness that we have felt from others in the industry.

I understand the issue - I really do. Artists should always be given credit for their work.

Just as an aside, yesterday alone, The Hive had over 1500 visits from pinterest links. This means that for all the effort you've been doing, either yourself or other artists had their worked liked enough that people not only looked at their pretty things at their site, but wanted to see more and came here to visit that artist's blog. THIS IS EXACTLY WHY we posted this challenge. Good job everyone!

Helen, yes just pin from blogs on The Hive. Lots of us have other boards too and if you went to follow us and cllicked on follow all then you'll see everything we pin not just our Hive board. Maybe that's what you are seeing?

Okay, loving this have gone over my 2 hour computer blogging time limit having so much fun. A bit time consuming but it's important that I acknowledge where these pics are from. Have set myself a challenge to focus on my fellow Aussie Hive members and the other wonderful people I follow in the Hive and then work back from there. Ok I think I did this right now I have to add all the pins to the hive board. Those I did add I just put in my own catagories so from now on what comes from the hive will go on that board....

WHEW! OMG! I went through the list of all the hivers in this thread. Followed everyone on HIVE...followed the Pinterest links (although there were one or two that didn't link) and pinned everyone who had a blog to my Creating the Hive board here: http://pinterest.com/redemptionart/creating-the-hive/. Like Christine, I used all of my internet time for the day...however, this was one of the most worthwhile things I have done in a long time! So nice to get to know more of my fellow hivers..as well as have an opportunity to very simply promote them! Thank you, HIVE for this!

Looking forward to Great and Mighty things in 2012!

Patrick, I'll go to Gacebook and send you an invitation, if you don't have one. Then you can join, and add a pin it button on your bookmarks bar. Almost every site lets you pin, but Facebook doesn't.

Patrick, Pinterest is like having multiple cork boards that you pin photos to only it's digital. You find a photo you'd like to put on a board then using a "pin it" button you can choose that photo and also choose which board it goes onto. You can re-pin other people's photos, like a photo or comment on a photo too. Pinterest has a help feature that shows you how to pin. It's pretty simple. If I can do it anyone can! Good luck!

I have to admit, I read through a comment so quick and somehow managed to hit unsubscribe by "nervous" tap! Oh my. Loving all the pins. This is one activity that is really helping me to learn who people are. Great fun! Wonderful idea! I did have to switch the notifications to daily, but I am slowly going through them to see everyone's boards.

One of the reasons i started with the Hive was it was so user freindly, and i jumped right in,, i recieved my invite to Pinterest a while back, but havent done a thing with it yet, because it is so intimidating, i dont know where to begin! LOL does any one have any easy sugestions?

I have never been able to get added to Pinterest. They keep saying I will get an "invite", and then nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

If you ask Pinterest to join it takes weeks. The best way is to get an invite from someone already there. If you send me your email I'll be happy to send you an invite. Or you can ask people you know who are already there to send you an invite.

I'm seeing pins on people's hive board that are not from the hive. Since the purpose of this is to showcase the hive members, I believe ALL hive pins need to be taken from the hive. Can someone please verify this?

Helen, my understanding of the whole idea was to promote The Hive by pinning from blogs here on The Hive. And that's what I do. If other people aren't then I guess they didn't understand?

the main problem with Pinterest is people not adding credit and the ORIGINAL URL the photo is at-----this is tantamount to infringement of copyright issues---make sure you credit the owner/maker!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello everyone...I have not been to visit for a while. ( in order) I had surgery , recovery, played catchup with all my blogs, page,Etsy, getting a Pinterest page, setting up a Re-opening of Merry Whatever Blog, looking for new crafters to join, ( if anyone is interested...let me know and just plain playing catch everywhere I go. Hope all are doing well here...I had 51 notifications...and never saw them but the ones from Patrick got thru. Thanks Patrick for not giving up on me.
