Baked Alaska is a divine dessert made by placing ice cream in a bed of sponge cake. It is then topped off with meringue and cooked in a very hot oven to brown the egg whites. Some people even use a small blowtorch to brown the meringue so that the ice cream does not heat up too much and melt.
American physicist Benjamin Thompson claims to be the first person to create baked Alaska. In 1804, he was investigating the heat resistance of beaten egg whites and discovered their delicious flavor.
The actual name "baked Alaska" did not originate though until 1876 in Delmonico's Restaurant in New York City. There are many different names for a baked Alaska including glace au four, omelette a la norvegienne, Norwegian omelette, and omelette surprise.
