Let me Show You

My brain is working harder than it ever has.

Fact.

I’m learning about this whole new world which I never knew existed.

Fact.

I’m overwhelmed but beyond excited.

Fact.

Today is Pinterest Friday.

Fact.

I have for what seems like a month but maybe really is “only” three weeks (I’m not sure, could check my posts but that would take too long!) been telling you about this new world that out of the blue opened up to me.

Art Dolls.

I should tell you that I struggle a little with the word “doll” … can’t help but feel that will make many people turn up their noses and go “not interested” but please, before you turn away from me and my new adventure … please give me a chance to show and explain.

Because anyone who loves colors, beads, happiness, silk, tulle, lace, fun and a bit of joy – I dare you to tell me that these ladies doesn’t make you smile.

I appreciate that not everyone would like to have one of these in their lives, but I also appreciate that some would (like me!) love to wake up and see a smily, happy colorful lady cheering you on your way for the day.

The thing about me and art … It has to make me happy!

Ask me how I feel about “The Scream” and I will almost start blubbering – I absolutely loathe that painting and get real upset especially around Halloween when kids come to my door wearing the mask from said painting.

I don’t do dark, “deep”, twisted art.

I strive to have a happy life – happy art is the only thing I let into it.

Yesterday I found “The Hive” … see button on right – and do feel free to press it and join this amazing place if you’re into anything – A N Y T H I N G crafty because there are so many amazing like-minded people over there.

While on the Hive I decided to contact Donna Cooper - who makes mind-blowing beautiful Art Dolls. Please press the her name to see her ETSY store.

She has been doing dolls for 4 years but told me she is now dabbling in something new – If her dolls are anything to go by I cannot wait!

I told her I would be featuring her dolls on my blog today.

She promised me she’d be stopping by to see my blog today which makes me slightly nervous but also super excited.

The Dolls I am showing you today are all copyrighted which is also important information.

Let’s do it shall we

This is what I believe to be Donna’s most elaborate doll … I love LOVE the outfit – look at those beads hanging off the skirt!

But if you like something even more colorful here’s “Lily”

Look at the details ….

So colorful – I haven’t even shown Miss Daughter – and she’s a lover of all things fairy – imagine what she’ll say when she sees this?

Or a Purple Doll … meet “Luna”

If I had been lucky enough to have had  another daughter – she would have been a Luna … I love that name … Luna!

Now Donna is one of many extraordinary Doll artists out there – there truly are some amazing artists – here’s “The Gift” made by Adele Sciortino

I chose a close up rather than a full picture – you can find her in full size on my Pinterest Board called Art Dolls but it is especially her hat that I think is so incredible.

Or how about “Whisper” by Abi Monroe – oh but she is so delicate, so pretty … so gentle

and her sister “Meadow” … I’d love them equally as much.

Such tranquility.

All these ladies – and their creators … all of them inspire me on such a deep level.

I want to make all of them – but I’m also scared because I have never done anything like this before.

I kind of think (not entirely sure yet!) that my dolls will have polymer clay faces – because that is a medium I really enjoy working in – and I know that I model well. But the dresses, I worry that I have no imagination to think it up?

I will continue to work hard, learning more about this art – seeking out networks and mentors.

I hope you’ve enjoyed a few of the treasures I found for you this week – I hope you understand the “doll” bit is not like one you’d find in ToysRus … these dolls – they truly are art.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Bless your heart.  I felt exactly the same way when I first encountered the concept of Art Dolls.  I said "oh, well, I'm not into dolls, really."  Then looked around my house to discover, um, yeah, I was.  Just not the poofy French antiques or baby dolls.  And when I began making art dolls (started with gourds, believe it or not) I felt like I had to convince people I was making "real" art.

I look forward to seeing how your journey develops.

Cheers,

Jan

Best of luck with your doll making! I can't wait to see what you do. Donna has been missing around The Hive lately so am happy to hear she's o.k. and I miss seeing her lovely dolls!

Thank you all so much - thank you for the welcome John - I feel at home already :)

Jan - it's a funny thing about not really wanting to be into dolls - but for every day and every new artist I "meet" I get more and more excited. Not sure friends or family feels the same though :)

Jennifer - I had such lovely emails from Donna - I can only imagine how much she's been missed - hopefully she'll be back soon!
