Your front door says a lot. What message are you conveying?

The front door is one of the most overlooked parts of curb appeal and yet it can be one of the easiest things to improve upon.  First Impressions are critical when selling, but even when you are redesigning for living, a good front door can make a home feel more welcome.  A bad front door can undermine anything positive you create in your garden or inside.

Ty Pennington, in this clip from ABC’s The Revolution discusses how a front door can sway your impression on a property.  I love how he advises that a front door should carry your personality and be accessorized with a beautiful paint color, accent, ornament or “knockers”.

In truth, I love the way the green door behind him was painted.  I’ve not seen it painted like that before and it kind of makes me wish that I had a raised panel door to try it out on.

If you are ready to get a little adventurous with color on your front door, I suggest that you  watch 31 Front Door Colors by The Color Fairy.  You may just find the perfect color selection to bring the real you outside.

Some other front door decor suggestions:

If your front door looks something like this….

If you’ve got a large porch, or want your door to appear larger and more prominent, consider painting the side panels the same color as the door.

Or consider making a statement by keeping it simple while adding a pure touch of color and sophistication…

Or keep your basic black, but really accessorize the space.  Yes, I know this is Christmas, but you could easily change the feel by mixing up the potted topiaries, swags and other adornments.

The point is don’t let your front door be boring.  You aren’t, so why should it be?  If you are a bit boring, well… isn’t this the perfect place to have a little fun and experiment with a little bling?

Thanks so much for all the tips Melissa!  We're moving to a new house over the next 4 weeks and there is a beautiful front stoop and a door with side transims.  While we can't paint it because we're renting, I can most certainly accessorize it to say "Welcome to Our Loving Home!"

Great ideas!  Have a fantastic day!

{Hugs!}

Very nice....I'm afraid my door probably says...nothing here inside so stay away.  LOL, and that's almost ok with me.  I say that because we rarely open the front door, it's soooooooooo hard to operate.  I can't use the key to unlock it.  One of the repairs that's been on hubby's list for way way too long, if you know what I mean.  I don't have a porch so the pretty decorating around it isn't possible.  It's just a stoop, really very unattractive.  I might take a picture when it stops rainy to post...maybe you could give me some ideas.

My front door says" get out of here before the giant spiders that live on my porch come after you!" I should probably do something about that.

hehe... I loved reading the comments about everyone's front doors... you ladies are a hoot and a half.  I personally think it just feels good to walk through a nice front door.  BTW, it is better feng shui to go through the front door than enter your home through the garage.... in case you wanted to know.

Oh no, not only is my door ugly, univiting, hard to operate.......now I have bad feng shui too!  Yikes....Melissa you might need to do an emergency intervention here.  Honestly, my Dad is about the only one uses the front door....the garage door is the one we use, as do others.......except when we have nice weather then people walk round back to the deck...they know they're going to find us outside not in.
