 FANTASTIC chat!!!! #TalkCrafts -2:04 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT : In summary: I think the best start to protect your stuff is 2 ask people not to use it & add attribution 2 img #TalkCrafts -2:04 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT : If you are posting tutorials, the goal should be to have someone make it.#talkcrafts << AMEN! :) -2:04 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT : If people are still stealing your work, ask them to remove then look to the DMCA for takedown options #talkcrafts -2:03 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I think that's a tragedy, and will hurt the craft industry as a whole. We used to share more freely. #talkcrafts -2:03 PM Feb 20th, 2012

  Amen, sister! :) #talkcrafts-2:03 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Me too. It's sad. I'm not going into the Smithsonian - I'm crafting. It's just a perspective thing, IMHO. #talkcrafts -2:03 PM Feb 20th, 2012

AMEN! RT : If you are posting tutorials, the goal should be to have someone make it.#TalkCrafts -2:03 PM Feb 20th, 2012

If people are still stealing your work, ask them to remove then look to the DMCA for takedown options #talkcrafts -2:03 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Yes it has :-D RT : Wow. This has been a really informative chat today! #talkcrafts -2:03 PM Feb 20th, 2012

no of course! but I see ppl saying X did this tutorial & now I'm trying it, even linking to X, then X gets upset #TalkCrafts -2:02 PM Feb 20th, 2012

If you write a blog, the goal should be for someone to see it and find it worth sharing. #talkcrafts -2:02 PM Feb 20th, 2012

If you are posting tutorials, the goal should be to have someone make it. #talkcrafts -2:02 PM Feb 20th, 2012

In summary: I think the best start to protect your stuff is to ask people not to use it & add attribution 2 img #talkcrafts -2:02 PM Feb 20th, 2012

EXactly! RT That makes no sense 2 me. I share coz I want other people 2 enjoy the craft themselves. #talkcrafts -2:01 PM Feb 20th, 2012

me too but i see so many posts with ppl complaining abt having their ideas stolen because of that #TalkCrafts -2:01 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Wow. This has been a really informative chat today! #talkcrafts -2:01 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Now if someone re-pubs a tutorial in its entirety and claims ownership, that's not okay.#TalkCrafts -2:01 PM Feb 20th, 2012

That just makes no sense to me. I share because I want other people to enjoy the craft themselves. #TalkCrafts -2:00 PM Feb 20th, 2012

If someone built a multi mill $$ biz with my work, that would be diff. but most "copying" is 4 insp #talkcrafts -2:00 PM Feb 20th, 2012

dang sneaky peeps RT : and if they are that sleazy there are ways to unwatermark if they are that determined #talkcrafts -1:59 PM Feb 20th, 2012

very true but some crafters do tutorials then get upset when someone makes it & shares what they made #TalkCrafts -1:59 PM Feb 20th, 2012

think this is true with MOST crafters: I watermark my photos, dont worry too much - if people r inspired, gr8t. #talkcrafts -1:59 PM Feb 20th, 2012

  Ha - Yes! :) #talkcrafts -1:58 PM Feb 20th, 2012

#TalkCrafts and if they are that sleazy there are ways to unwatermark if they are that determined -1:58 PM Feb 20th, 2012

  agreed :-) #talkcrafts -1:58 PM Feb 20th, 2012

#TalkCrafts I'm not so worried about making the copyright notice something that can't be cropped out, only really sleazy ppl will crop -1:58 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT : I just really think it should have your copyright/name PLUS link to yr post. Helps avoid some issues w bad pins #talkcrafts -1:57 PM Feb 20th, 2012

If someone built a multi mill $$ biz with my work, that would be diff. but most "copying" is 4 insp. #talkcrafts -1:57 PM Feb 20th, 2012

to digitally mark files RT  we use Adobe here, its a choice on the file menu called "File Info"#talkcrafts -1:57 PM Feb 20th, 2012

We don't obviously protect our images so our customers can use them freely :-) #talkcrafts -1:57 PM Feb 20th, 2012

yeah :( gone in April #TalkCrafts-1:57 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Yes Adobe's files so that but not everyone can read that information #talkcrafts -1:56 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I just really think it should have your copyright/name PLUS link to yr post. Helps avoid some issues w bad pins #TalkCrafts -1:56 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I watermark my photos, but I also don't worry too much - if people are inspired, great. #talkcrafts -1:56 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Hmm we use Adobe here and its a choice on the file menu called "File Info" but being a wholesaler.. #talkcrafts -1:56 PM Feb 20th, 2012

sadly Picnik is going out of business at just the wrong time #talkcrafts -1:55 PM Feb 20th, 2012

#TalkCrafts I think that  (Alice Merlino)'s custom frame + copyright notice is one of the best around :) But she stopped using it -1:55 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT : picnik - heard they are no more tho Cyn! or will be soon #talkcrafts -1:55 PM Feb 20th, 2012

How do you think they should be watermarked? what's the best way to protect yourself#talkcrafts -1:55 PM Feb 20th, 2012

If someone has their own affiliate link, it should not be replaced by  - agreed.#talkcrafts -1:54 PM Feb 20th, 2012

They're easy to do Dale. I do them with picnik but I'm sure there are many other ways to make too. #TalkCrafts -1:54 PM Feb 20th, 2012

any recommended programs for that? RT: You can always add digital copyright info into the actual file too. #talkcrafts -1:54 PM Feb 20th, 2012

NO, I agree... i just didn't realize it was happening. they have a right to monetize#talkcrafts -1:53 PM Feb 20th, 2012

haven't worried abt watermark before, now will have to learn to make one #talkcrafts -1:53 PM Feb 20th, 2012

  - I agree - most people don't know. And sharing is good in the craft industry #talkcrafts -1:53 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT : ultimately anything exposed to photography CAN be recreated, tho no way ID want the reverse engineering hob :S #talkcrafts -1:53 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I don't have a problem with it IF they work out the bugs where they are (accidentally?) replacing others links #talkcrafts -1:53 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I think the ones that also list the originating blog post address are better. #TalkCrafts -1:52 PM Feb 20th, 2012

You can always add digital copyright info into the actual file too. #talkcrafts -1:52 PM Feb 20th, 2012

  - I don't have a problem with their transparent monetization - it's FAR superior to ads.#talkcrafts -1:52 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT : I think if Pinterest changes its terms and changes its image storage it can be awesome and 100% legal. #talkcrafts -1:52 PM Feb 20th, 2012

agreed! RT : I find that most honest people just dnt know what they r doing is wrong, they will not do it if asked. #talkcrafts -1:52 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I think the way you watermark is important too. Some just put something like copyright Cyn Gagen. #TalkCrafts-1:52 PM Feb 20th, 2012

#talkcrafts Ultimately anything exposed to photography CAN be recreated, tho no way I'D want the reverse engineering hob :S -1:52 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Remember the adage "If you are not paying for the service UR not the consumer UR the product" #talkcrafts -1:52 PM Feb 20th, 2012

its a lot to absorb! RT : ME TOO Cyn! RT : my head is spinning thinking about all this! #talkcrafts -1:51 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT : Post notices on your website asking people not to take your stuff (or not pin if you dont want that). #TalkCrafts -1:51 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT  I think if Pinterest changes its terms and changes its image storage it can be awesome and 100% legal. #TalkCrafts -1:50 PM Feb 20th, 2012

always is... RT : Well it seems the free love world of Pinterest is a little darker than we originally imagined #talkcrafts -1:50 PM Feb 20th, 2012

OK, so suggestions to protect our content? Watermark in areas that can't be removed... any other suggestions? #talkcrafts -1:50 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Well it seems the free love world of Pinterest is a little darker than we originally imagined #talkcrafts -1:49 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Of course advertising is probably around the corner, but that's what they are doing already. #talkcrafts -1:49 PM Feb 20th, 2012

ooohhhhh slick RT : If you pin a book cover on Amazon, they change the link to their own affiliate code. #talkcrafts -1:48 PM Feb 20th, 2012

And it's far more than Amazon, they use a service that hooks in with almost anyone who uses affiliate marketing #talkcrafts -1:48 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Supposedly if you put your own affiliate code in first they don't change it but people are saying they do it :( #talkcrafts -1:48 PM Feb 20th, 2012

If you pin a book cover on Amazon, they change the link to their own affiliate code.#talkcrafts -1:48 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT #TalkCrafts I think the two best things we as bloggers can do are to do the right thing ourselves & teach others to do so. -1:47 PM Feb 20th, 2012

My guess, and this is JUST a guess, is that their are restrictions on pixel size, etc #talkcrafts -1:47 PM Feb 20th, 2012

??? RT : Pinterest HAS monetization, they change your links to insert their own affiliate codes #talkcrafts -1:47 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I'm afraid my answer is a definite maybe. But I'd still say it's ethically best to get permission. #talkcrafts -1:47 PM Feb 20th, 2012

The google idea is definitely something we'll look into. #talkcrafts -1:46 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT : Google was taken to court over it. Youd have2 follow the rules given Google exactly & I dont know what they r #talkcrafts -1:46 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Pinterest HAS monetization, they change your links to insert their own affiliate codes#talkcrafts -1:46 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I think they'll last. Now that they're so hot, they can easily monetize. #TalkCrafts -1:45 PM Feb 20th, 2012

so maybe? RT : Could you resize a picture like google does and then link to the original? #talkcrafts -1:45 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Google was taken to court over it. You'd have to follow the rules given Google exactly & I don't know what they are #talkcrafts -1:45 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT #TalkCrafts I think 2 best things we as bloggers can do 2 do the right thing ourselves & teach others 2 do so. #talkcrafts -1:45 PM Feb 20th, 2012

AGREED RT  #TalkCrafts I think the 2 best things we as bloggrs can do are do the rght thng ourselves & teach others #talkcrafts -1:45 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT : I think the two best things we as bloggers can do are to do the right thing ourselves & teach others to do so. #talkcrafts -1:45 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Do you think Pinterest will last? With zero monetization and valuation of $2M and rising #talkcrafts -1:45 PM Feb 20th, 2012

YES! RT : I think 2 best things we as bloggers can do are to do the right thing ourselves & teach others to do so. #TalkCrafts -1:44 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Good question RT Could you resize a picture like google does and then link to the original? #TalkCrafts -1:44 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I have not read the court case to know the details but there is some possibility. But I can't give a blanket yes #talkcrafts -1:44 PM Feb 20th, 2012

#TalkCrafts I think the two best things we as bloggers can do are to do the right thing ourselves & teach others to do so. -1:43 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Could you resize a picture like google does and then link to the original? #talkcrafts -1:43 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT : you can link to their post on their blog/site OR if you want pics, you can ask for permission to use those 1st #talkcrafts -1:43 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT  So do you think there is a good answer other than everything on the web being public domain? #talkcrafts -1:43 PM Feb 20th, 2012

*tick tock* RT : Ask h their permission. In my experience if you are patient 99% of them will say yes. #talkcrafts -1:43 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT : As crafters, case can be made on bth sides. Pinterest & featured blogs hlp provide needed links & exposure #TalkCrafts -1:43 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I could go on and on about some possible solutions, but they are complicated and possibly too late now anyway #talkcrafts -1:42 PM Feb 20th, 2012

On the other hand, this is apparently a clear violation of copyright. #talkcrafts -1:42 PM Feb 20th, 2012

you can link to their post on their blog/site OR if you want pics, you can ask for permission to use those 1st #TalkCrafts -1:42 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Ask h their permission. In my experience if you are patient 99% of them will say yes.#talkcrafts -1:42 PM Feb 20th, 2012

so I guess I should go unlink everything on my blog #talkcrafts -1:42 PM Feb 20th, 2012

So do you think there is a good answer other than everything on the web being public domain?#talkcrafts -1:42 PM Feb 20th, 2012

So, as crafters, the case can be made on both sides. Pinterest & featured blogs help provide needed links & exposure #talkcrafts -1:41 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I know some books have come out on copyright for bloggers, don't know the names offhand. #talkcrafts -1:41 PM Feb 20th, 2012

so if I am inspired by 4 different people who make a certain craft, I can't link to them? #talkcrafts -1:41 PM Feb 20th, 2012

If their image shows up when a viewer looks at *your* page, that is hotlinking. #talkcrafts -1:40 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT : Yeah you can get hit with copyright and unauthorized access to networks, two charges instead of one. #TalkCrafts -1:40 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT : but thats just it...theres SO much to know about copyright & how it applies to blogging#talkcrafts -1:40 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT : Yeah you can get hit with copyright and unauthorized access to networks, two charges instead of one. #talkcrafts -1:40 PM Feb 20th, 2012

 I don't use their image, I link directly to their site #talkcrafts -1:40 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I am not aware of a court case involving hotlinking but please remember I had to retire 6 years ago. #talkcrafts -1:40 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I know, I need to rethink too. RT: wow - 8 yrs of blogging & I was always linking to others. #talkcrafts -1:39 PM Feb 20th, 2012

but that's just it...there's SO much to know about copyright & how it applies to blogging#TalkCrafts -1:39 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT : You are using the bandwidth they paid for when you link. That may be a better legal case than copyright #talkcrafts -1:39 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Yeah you can get hit with copyright and unauthorized access to networks, two charges instead of one. #talkcrafts -1:39 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT :Yes, some people have still gone to court over images that were taken down on request. But that is very rare. #talkcrafts -1:39 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I do know a real estate agent that makes {good} money on this happening. she makes charts, etc agents use, she fines #talkcrafts -1:38 PM Feb 20th, 2012

  Be safe :) #TalkCrafts -1:38 PM Feb 20th, 2012

The only legal and ethical thing if you want to use someone's image is to get their permission first. #talkcrafts -1:37 PM Feb 20th, 2012

  that's what I thought Dale!#talkcrafts -1:37 PM Feb 20th, 2012

be safe RT : Sorry but I need to run, wind is getting really bad here and storms are brewing bye all #talkcrafts -1:37 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Have a great Day and stay safe in the storm! #talkcrafts -1:37 PM Feb 20th, 2012

so linking 2 someone's photo is not good? I'd rather link than upload their photo when giving an example of someone's work. #talkcrafts -1:36 PM Feb 20th, 2012

If you remove a image that you copied right away when owner asks can u get in trouble still?#talkcrafts -1:36 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Now just to be the devil's advocate here.. #talkcrafts -1:36 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Sorry but I need to run, wind is getting really bad here and storms are brewing bye all #TalkCrafts -1:36 PM Feb 20th, 2012

That's why even if you don't repost the image on your site it is still unauthorized copies.#talkcrafts -1:36 PM Feb 20th, 2012

so many people think oh i'll just throw a little blog together for fun & don't realize the legalities of what they're doing #TalkCrafts -1:36 PM Feb 20th, 2012

To be extremely technical, every time someone views an image in their browser, it makes a temporary copy. #talkcrafts -1:35 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I'd consider hotlinking less bad than an outright copy but still not good or legal. #talkcrafts -1:35 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Same RT  I worry about that too but Id rather give up a few eyeballs to know I am doing the right thing. #TalkCrafts -1:35 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Now see, I thought that would be better because it keeps it theirs, not ours - good to know. #talkcrafts -1:34 PM Feb 20th, 2012

OK just wanted to make sure :-)#talkcrafts -1:34 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I worry about that too but I'd rather give up a few eyeballs to know I am doing the right thing.#TalkCrafts -1:34 PM Feb 20th, 2012

because I only include links to their posts if i don't get permission to reuse their pics in time #TalkCrafts -1:34 PM Feb 20th, 2012

  That's hotlinking. I mean a text link.#talkcrafts -1:33 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Ah, see that is hotlinking, which is probably a violation AND bad etiquette b/c it uses their bandwidth #talkcrafts -1:33 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Is linking ligit? In the digital world, using a photo URL is putting unknown and undo stress on a server #talkcrafts -1:33 PM Feb 20th, 2012

i get so worried about violating copyright that sometimes i lament the fact that my blog is "boring" compared to others #TalkCrafts -1:33 PM Feb 20th, 2012

And to be clear I do not mean hotlinking (where their image shows up in your post but is only on their servers) #talkcrafts -1:33 PM Feb 20th, 2012

no, we "copy image URL" then use it in the 'add image' section of our blog post #talkcrafts-1:33 PM Feb 20th, 2012

then we try to leave comments in their original blog saying that we featured this in xyz blog and give them URL #talkcrafts -1:32 PM Feb 20th, 2012

But you only link to their image, not post it? That's totally fine. Linking is legit. Copying photos is not. #talkcrafts -1:31 PM Feb 20th, 2012

You can put yourself out there but then you risk being copied :-/ Ahh the freedom of information... #talkcrafts-1:31 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I always start with Google. You can do a lot there if you know your search skills well.#talkcrafts -1:31 PM Feb 20th, 2012

then we write about what it is, say their blog name, highlight and link back to them #talkcrafts-1:31 PM Feb 20th, 2012

It seems like this is the same argument that has been going around the web for years. #talkcrafts -1:31 PM Feb 20th, 2012

What I find most frustrating is when artists start yelling about having their stuff stolen & then they turn around & do same #TalkCrafts -1:31 PM Feb 20th, 2012

it's ideas we find on pinterest. We go back to their blog & use their photo URL, so it's always linked 2 them #talkcrafts -1:31 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I can no longer do much more than rant on some blogs and tweet about it a lot. Want to do a lot more :( #TalkCrafts -1:30 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Personally I find this so frustrating since defending the indie artist is why I became a lawyer. But b/c of disability #TalkCrafts -1:30 PM Feb 20th, 2012

so I know that sites like copyscape can help you find when someone is copying you. What others do you like? #talkcrafts -1:29 PM Feb 20th, 2012

It is definitely a problem. There are some moves to educate people but a lot more work is needed.#TalkCrafts -1:29 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT : Im all for people being permissive about their stuff *if they want to be*. Thats the whole point of ownership #talkcrafts -1:28 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Do you do this for blogs not resyndicated on The Hive? Do you ask permission to use the photo first? #talkcrafts -1:28 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I'd say the biggest problem for now is the photo storage. But that "we have the right to use images" scares me. #talkcrafts -1:28 PM Feb 20th, 2012

me too...problem is that those big bloggers have set a precedent that others think they can follow#TalkCrafts -1:28 PM Feb 20th, 2012

We do highlights on blogs, using their photo URL & linking back to their site. We comment on their blog & give them our URL #talkcrafts -1:28 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I'd say the biggest problem for now is the photo storage. But that "we have the right to use images" scares me. #talkcrafts -1:27 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Well as far as I know now Pinterest says that it's "bad etiquette" to pin ONLY your own stuff. #TalkCrafts -1:27 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Yes, it is good for a lot of sites in a lot of ways... the biggest problem seems to be that it stores the photos? #talkcrafts -1:26 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I'm all for people being permissive about their stuff *if they want to be*. That's the whole point of ownership #TalkCrafts -1:26 PM Feb 20th, 2012

But no one complains because of the traffic they get.#TalkCrafts -1:26 PM Feb 20th, 2012

And there are some of the "big bloggers" out there who do "roundups" of people's posts and they never get permission. #TalkCrafts -1:26 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT : the thing is, I know bloggers who have had traffic increases of over 400% from Pinterest. Theyre not complaining. #talkcrafts -1:25 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Very true. Some say their stuff is going to wind up pinned anyway so they'd rather put it there themselves #TalkCrafts -1:25 PM Feb 20th, 2012

interesting RT : Actually when I first joined Pinterest, it was against terms of service to pin your own stuff. #talkcrafts -1:25 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Some of the more cynical among us thing the terms are just so they can blame users for copyright infringements #TalkCrafts -1:25 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I'm familiar with one real estate agent that makes a pretty tidy income just sending cease & desist violation penalties #talkcrafts -1:24 PM Feb 20th, 2012

BUT that's not what Pinterest says they want you to do. They say that only pinning your own stuff is "rude". #TalkCrafts -1:24 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Time and finding them RT : You just need a cease & desist letter to go after thieves. #talkcrafts -1:23 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Even sites where you can't right click to save, your artwork can be pinned #talkcrafts -1:18 PM Feb 20th, 2012

That doesn't protect it but is does ensure you get credit. I'd do it if I had any photos worth stealing ;) #talkcrafts -1:18 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I think watermarking is a start too as long as it's not distracting from your image. That drives me crazy. #TalkCrafts-1:18 PM Feb 20th, 2012

on Pinterest they're storing full size images #TalkCrafts -1:18 PM Feb 20th, 2012

RT  Google only stores a thumbnail of the image, you have to click through to see the full size. #talkcrafts -1:18 PM Feb 20th, 2012

From what I've heard is that the issue is that on FB & Google it's only a thumbnail #TalkCrafts-1:18 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Very true. Those people should use a Creative Commons licence to make their feelings clear.#TalkCrafts -1:17 PM Feb 20th, 2012

So, how do you protect your images? I think watermarking is a beginning. If it's placed where it can't be cropped. #talkcrafts -1:17 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Google only stores a thumbnail of the image, you have to click through to see the full size.#TalkCrafts -1:17 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I think what has happened is that a lot of bloggers don't pursue the issue as long as they get credit #TalkCrafts-1:17 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Is any of this any different as to how Google displays images just because it is shown else where? #TalkCrafts -1:17 PM Feb 20th, 2012

Too many people use "free publicity for you" as their justification for using your stuff w/o permission #talkcrafts -1:16 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I would say Tumblr is worse. You usually can't find the orginal source. it's not a reqmnt to list #talkcrafts -1:16 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I know one of the big things about SEO is that you need others linking to you... #talkcrafts -1:16 PM Feb 20th, 2012

How do you feel about blogs that use the image URL and link back to the site & blog? #talkcrafts -1:15 PM Feb 20th, 2012

That's why I remind people it IS copyrighted. The law may be wrong in many (other) ways but it's still the law. #TalkCrafts -1:15 PM Feb 20th, 2012

I know but it's done all the time. Some think if they give credit that's enough. It's not. Have to get permission #TalkCrafts -1:15 PM Feb 20th, 2012

#TalkCrafts I have not researched this yet (am doing so for an article) but people have said Tumblr is about as bad or worse. Can't confirm -1:14 PM Feb 20th, 2012
