A Special Request

Let me begin by saying that I think y'all ROCK.  I am beside myself flipping from one area of The Hive to another - what with the Blogs and the artwork, handiwork, crafts and more y'all produce....well I'm having a blast and am so happy to be a part of it all.

Some of you may have noticed by checking out my profile that I am probably not your typical member of The Hive.  I am the founding chapter leader of Mothers & MORE Greater Raleigh Durham, Chapter 331, a local chapter of a national non-profit organization called Mothers & MORE.  If you are unfamiliar with Mothers & MORE there is much to be said - some of which I'll go into here, but most of which national does well enough on their own and you can check the organization out at www.mothersandmore.org . Mothers & MORE logo

The mission of Mothers & MORE is an important one to communicate.  It is because the organization has truly lived their mission for over twenty years that I've been a member for all the years I have; and why I have now started a chapter for the women of the Greater Raleigh/Durham area, where I recently relocated.

Mothers & MORE is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of mothers through support, education and advocacy. We addresss mothers' needs as individuals and members of society, and promote the value of all the work mothers do. (I might add that some dads, who believe in the Mission are joining chapters too)

Mothers and MORE has several core beliefs as well.  I won't go into them for this post, but maybe I can share some of those beliefs in another Blog post.  If y'all are interested.  I hope you are and I hope you will convey your interest!  We are very active in Advocacy and Community Outreach, with projects such as Power of a Purse and Women Build, just to mention a couple.

The reason for the title of "A Special Request" is because I really do have a special request for the members of  The Hive.   You see, our chapter is BRAND new.  So new that hopefully tomorrow we will be finalizing the details of our meeting place and time.  And here's where I hope y'all will come in.  Once we have our meeting space firmly in place, the chapter will host an Open House for all the women in the Greater Raleigh/Durham area.  I would like to offer give aways to those that attend the Open House - as the chapters' way of saying thank you for attending.  I am requesting, of you, either donated gift certificates and/or gifts that can be given to each of the attendees.  Of course I can provide an IRS donation form to anyone that requests it - and I imagine each of you that donates should!

What's in it for you?

Each person that donates will have a card placed at the open house stating the name of the person or company that made the donation; we will THANK YOU on our website just as soon as it is live; we will mention your donation on Big Tent; we will devote an entire advertising page of our e-newsletter to THE HIVE and those donations that came from the affiliation; we will Twitter our thanks for each donation and of course we will mention each and every one on our facebook fan page.  That's a whole lotta' advertising.  Additionally, there are Mothers & MORE member only loops of which will learn of The Hive AND the donations y'all provided - meaning of course, that potentially members in over 100 chapters of Mothers & More will be visiting your site, your blogs, your arts and possibly even joining as artisans themselves.

Mothers & MORE really does believe "Together, mothers are powerful".  I really do believe this.  I hope you too really do believe this and will support my request.   Please feel free to ask me any questions you have about what I am asking for, or about Mothers & MORE.

Finally, THANK YOU to Melissa Marro for the brilliance in coming up with the idea of The Hive; the fortitude to see your dreams come to fruition and for your friendship and graciousness in allowing me to become a member and Blog about this request.

WOW...What type of a time line are you thinking of for your open house?  I'm thinking about what I might be able to donate; should timing work out.  I had quite a list (some have deadlines, some don't) of various charities I've committed to.  I'm also wondering about the numbers you might be expecting to have...wondering and thinking.

This seems like a very worthy cause.

Hi Sandy,

Thank you for your interest and your questions - and your questions are important!  I am so glad you consider this a worthy cause, especially as I know you do commit to other non-profits.  The dates I'm planning on for the Open House are either October 19th, or 26th, preferably the 19th.  I am planning on 50-60 attendees, because advertising will be heavy.  Of course it is entirely possible to have more women in attendance, but I'm also reaching out to the local community for donations.

I hope I've answered your questions.  Please let me know if you need any more information.

Jackie

Thanks for your response.  Hope you get more interest here.  I don't have the ability to do anything of that volumne in the time frame presented; but that brings me to my next question.  Would a scarf or two (knitted/crocheted) be something you'd like to give?  Or does not having the same thing for each women in attendance present you with a problem?

Hi Sandy,

We will accept whatever you are willing to donate, be it one item or 10.  A scarf would be a great donation and no, we do not expect to give each woman in attendance the same item.

Thankyou again and again for your interest.  Wishing you a TERRIFIC day.

Ok, Jackie

I'm thinking of skinny type, decorative scarves vs heavy winter type.  I have a couple I love wearing even in the summer.  Though I keep them loose due to hot flashes.  lol

Can you zap me an address, I'll try to get started on this right away.  I've reviewed my list and think I can move this fairly close to upper part of it.

HI Jackie!!  I'm so glad you DID post this!  I know yesterday you were shy about it when I told you to.  You see, Jackie and I are good friends - fellow stagers - Ok, sh'es not a stager any longer but I still love her... so rest assured this charity is legit and she can really use your help!  Jackie has a big heart and I know many of our members here do too...

Jackie - I would also suggest you add this to the group:  Crafting for Charity  - you know how to do that from AR days, right?

Well.. as always Sandy jumped up right away to pitch it... she's amazing with that!  I don't think she creates for herself, but only for the joy of helping others!  I know that some others will jump in as well... where are my Zombie Knitters?  I'm sure they will turn up too..

Hi Melissa - Thank you so very much.  The love is mutual ;)

I really do not know how to get this post over to Crafting for Charity.  Anyone want to advise me?  Appreciation in advance. :)

Great Jackie, I'm gonna check my stash today to see what's appropriate.  In fact, I just decided it might be a good thing to take to the 1st tailgate of the season which is today and get a start!

Thanks Melissa (I do once in awhile, make something for myself...see the pretty blue scarf in my profile picture).  You got me curious what's a stager?

Calling out to the Zombie's....you there?

Jackie - been a while since you were at AR huh?  Go to the group (which I left you the URL link in the message above), become a member.... go back and edit this blog and under it you will see a box for the group, check the box and save.  It will automatically add to that group.

Sandy - well, thats a good thing... (that you still knit for yourself)

A home stager works with real estate professionals and homeowners to create a model home feeling in any home that is for sale regardless of age, price, occupancy status.  We help the homes sell significantly faster and typically for more money than comperable non-staged properties.  (national stats are 78% faster and 3-6% more money)  When working in occupied properties we use what the homeowner already has, occassionally supplimenting with additional pieces.  In vacant properties, we bring in furniture, artwork and accessories to create the transformation.  You can visit my website www.WeStageSC.com or www.StagingAndRedesign.com for more information.... Here is a quick example of some of what we do...

A worthy cause in my book! Send a mailing address and I will send a hand bag. What mom doesn't need another conveyance for all the tools of motherhood!

In my former life I spent fifteen years both being a working mother and a voice for considering both sides of the employer business needs and employee family needs equation. I am proud to say the organization I worked for during that time, a private not-for-profit serving individuals and their families, worked hard to maintain a balance and an appreciation for the constant state of change we all live in.

Kudos to you for using this brave new world of social media to share what you believe in!

Melissa, thanks for the info.  I knew that profession existed, just never knew what the name was.  Sounds like it might be kinda fun, even though work.  Plus, you get to use your creative side to make it warm and inviting.

Gail, loved your term conveyance for all the tools of motherhood.....that's soooooooo perfect.

Jackie, look how cool this is, you've gotten help already.  The Hive is SUPERCALAFRAGALISTICEXPEALADOCIOUS.

I was wondering what swag meant.  I've not come across that regarding donations, or crafting.

Just popping in Jackie to see how things are going.  Behind here, was too hot to knit at the tailgate; but got yarn on my desk that's going to work with me tonight and will get started.  We're suppose to have some down time and I'm counting on that for knitting time.

Sandy - Really, I was thanking everyone that has volunteered their time, treausre and talents for our chapter and I'm still grateful for all you've done too :)

I think my initial goal might have been a little over-zealous, but we are getting donations - from THEHIVE members, from local businesses and a few other individual folks that I have personally asked to help.  Will every woman get a door prize? More than likely not, at least not this time around.  I am grateful for all the chapter has received and we will have great fun giving those items away that we do have.  I am looking forward to the Open House.  AND I am looking forward to being able to list and thank each person/company/author that has donated to our chapter...that in itself is almost as much fun as planning the Open House.

Sorry for the confusion Jackie.  I was hopping you would meet your goal of something for everyone there.  Are you close with the numbers?  If so, maybe I think of a few more ways to add.  Mailed box out yesterday to you with 2 more scarves and 5 washcloths, a pretty soap, and victorian style nightlight...I think you could count that as 8 more door prizes.
