After attending Central Michigan University upon graduation from high school, I realized that I honestly didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up! I came home, and started my journey into art. I became a graphic artist for a major chemical company, and supervised their graphics/advertising department for many years. I later fell in love with pen and ink illustration, and decided to move from graphics and advertising into the auto industry where I became a technical illustrator. I "retired" from illustration in 1995, and shortly after that I created my own successful, international needlework design company, Lavender Wings. While designing has been lots of fun, the industry has slowed down over the past few years because of the recession (and internet piracy) and I'll be closing the doors on my business at the end of this year (2010). Time for something new!!
What mediums do you prefer to work in?
I have a passion for fibers, and am working on some ideas (which are still in my head, unfortunately!) putting them together with polymer clay. I'm a "people watcher", and love to create characters whose personality shines thru their uniqueness. I've done this in the past with needlework, and now have to get busy with clay, fibers and paint!
Who are your favorite artists and why do they inspire you?
I love James Christiansen's wonderfully whimsical characters and Billy Jacobs folk art ... but really, there are just too many to list!!
What gives you inspiration?
Just about everything - mostly what I see around me each day; sometimes it's people I've met, other times it's something I've seen in a book or magazine ... and definitely all of the wonderful artists here on The Hive!!
