Hey, my name is Corey Johnston, and I live in San Diego, CA! I am a clothing artist, costume designer, and teacher. I have an MFA in Theatre (with an emphasis in Costume Design) from Minnesota State University, and a BFA in Technical Theatre from University of Central Missouri. I have worked in regional theatre off and on for 15 years. I worked at the Old Globe Theatre as a costume technician for 5 years before moving on to the University of San Diego for 10. Recently, I have moved on and established my own business, Relished Artistry, LLC, that creates wearable art pieces and personalized high-end costumes for individual clients. I am exploring jewelry and dolls as well! My website is: www.relishedartistry.com My costume design website is : www.coreycostumedesign.com Stop by for a visit!
What mediums do you prefer to work in?
I work in fabric, polymer clay, and mixed media. Lately I've been branching out into tin cans, faux finishes, and resin casting... I guess you could say my medium is "eclectic."
Who are your favorite artists and why do they inspire you?
I have so many!! I am discovering more and more all the time... I love Laurie Mika, James Christensen, Klimt, Michael deMeng, Chomik+Meder, Joseph Cornell... I'll have to add more to the list later!
What gives you inspiration?
I am inspired by figurative art that's done in abstraction... My background is in theatrical costuming, so I am attracted to the stories of people and the overall striving of humanity to be better... I like to see art that alludes to that. I like to see garments that tell a story, that have a style, that are worn not because they're fashionable but because they mean something to the person wearing them. I am not a big fan of "fashion", and strive to create garments and other pieces that speak to individualism and uniqueness. I don't care for manufactured craft or art...
I also like rustic, primitive art. Baubles. Turn of the century flair... Assemblage is fascinating to me--I like how one applies their own story to what they're seeing. The individual's experience when viewing a piece is what it's all about. I love to guide them into feeling something they can't without some sort of prompt or assistance, and my art is that help. If a person doesn't feel different after seeing a piece of art, it's not effective in my book...
Inspiration comes to me in many forms, and I'm still reacting and learning what that is. : )
